AI training or coaching: why the format changes everything

The market is flooded with AI training: MOOCs, bootcamps, online certifications, recorded webinars. Thousands of people take them. Very few come out transformed. That's no accident, and it's not your fault: the format is fundamentally mismatched with what generative AI actually is.

The structural problem with training courses

A training course, by definition, delivers the same content to everyone. The trainer runs through their curriculum, you take notes, you leave with slides. Two weeks later, the forgetting curve has done its work: 90% of the content has evaporated, because none of it was anchored in your actual practice.

And there's something more troubling: the curriculum was designed before anyone knew you. Your tasks, your tools, your constraints, your actual level — none of it enters the equation. You learn generic use cases while your daily work is anything but generic.

Why generative AI is poorly learned through training

Generative AI isn't software with menus to memorize. It's a practice-based, deeply contextual skill. An HR manager, a financial consultant, and a craftsman don't need the same systems, the same prompts, or the same tools. Learning AI 'in general' is like learning to negotiate without ever negotiating: intellectually interesting, practically useless.

The skill is built by doing, on your own cases, with someone who unblocks what's stuck at the moment it gets stuck. That's exactly what a training course can't offer — and what coaching does by nature.
